26-year-old Danial Murphy of the Sackville Waves Aquatic Team earned silver tonight in the S5 50m Backstroke with a new Canadian Para Record time of 52.86 at the 2016 Canadian Olympic and Para-Swimming Trials. Danial has set three Canadian records this week; earlier in the week he set the S5 200m Freestyle and yesterday he set the S5 50m Butterfly.
Danial was a member of Canada’s IPC World Championship Team that competed last summer in Glasgow, Scotland and a medalist on the Para Pan American Games team that competed here in Toronto in August.
19 of Nova Scotia’s top swimmers are competing in the six-day event that will wrap up on Sunday April 10th. Swimmers are vying for spots to represent Canada at the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Rio this summer; Canada’s Junior swimmers are also vying for spots on the 2016 Junior Pan Pacific Championships team that will compete in Maui, Hawaii August 13-28. Swimming Canada will also be selecting the 2016 FINA World Short Course Swimming Championships team racing in Windsor, Ontario in December.
In total approximately 500 swimmers from 100 clubs are competing, including USA National team members.
