26-year-old Danial Murphy of the Sackville Waves Aquatic Team finished fourth tonight in the S5 50m Butterfly finals at the Canadian Olympic and Para-Swimming Trials in Toronto at the Pan Am Sports Centre. Murphy finished with a lifetime best time of 47.87 setting a new Canadian Para Record, his second of the meet to date. During the first day of competition he set the S5 200m Freestyle record with a time of 3:01.27.
Danial was a member of Canada’s IPC World Championship Team that competed last summer in Glasgow, Scotland and he was a medalist on the Para Pan American Games team that competed here in Toronto in August.
19 of Nova Scotia’s top swimmers are competing in the six-day event that will wrap up on Sunday April 10th. Swimmers are vying for spots to represent Canada at the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Rio this summer; Canada’s Junior swimmers are also vying for spots on the 2016 Junior Pan Pacific Championships team that will compete in Maui, Hawaii August 13-28. Swimming Canada will also be selecting the 2016 FINA World Short Course Swimming Championships team racing in Windsor, Ontario in December.
In total approximately 500 swimmers from 100 clubs are competing, including USA National team members.
