Technical Director Announced

Swim Nova Scotia is pleased to announce Lance Cansdale as the organization's new technical director. He begins the position on April 1.

"With more than 16 years of experience as our provincial coach, Lance brings a wealth of knowledge to this new role," said Swim Nova Scotia president Michael Gorman.

"We are confident he will help lead swimming in the province to new levels of success."

The technical director will work closely with Swim Nova Scotia's executive director, Bette El-Hawary, on club growth and the evolution of club and athlete pathways. He will work with coaches and conduct periodic club visits.


As a former All-American swimmer, Lance has over thirty years’ experience as a competitive swimming professional; he is the former Executive Director for Swim B.C. and has been a Head Coach with some of the best club and university programs out there, including California State University-Bakersfield and Simon Fraser University, along with the Hyack Swim Club and the Halifax Trojans Aquatic Club. He has also been named the Head/Lead Coach for Canada at the 2013 and 2015 FISU Games, the 2010 Nations Cup and the 2011 NACC. He has also been part of the staff to three FINA World Championships (2001, 03, 05) and the Commonwealth Games (2002). Lance will also continue his coaching role with the Dalhousie Tigers University Program while working with Swim Nova Scotia.

Top Nova Scotia Swimmers Wrapped up Competition at the 2023 Canadian Swimming Trials

Seven of Nova Scotia’s top swimmers wrapped up competition today at the 2023 Canadian Swimming Championships at Toronto’s Pan Am Sports Centre (TPASC). The meet saw two World Records by 16-year-old Summer McIntosh in the 400m Freestyle and 400m Individual Medley!

 The competition took place March 28-April 2nd with over 600 swimmers from nearly 150 clubs across Canada, who raced for spots to represent Canada at the 2023 World Championships, 2023 World Para Swimming Championships and 2023 Pan American Games Teams.

The top swim of the meet from Nova Scotia’s swimmers came from 15-year-old Julie Nolan-McCarthy of Halifax who set a new Nova Scotia Provincial Record in the 15-17 100m Breaststroke with a time of 1:12.77; the previous record was set in 1989 by Carwai Seto.  Julie finished fourth in the Junior 100m Breaststroke and tenth in the Junior 200m Breaststroke.

Top Nova Scotia Swimmers to Compete at the 2023 Eastern Canadian Swimming Championships

The 2023 Eastern Canadian Swimming Championships brings together a great mix of Canada’s senior, youth, and junior swimmers from Eastern Canada. This National Championship is held the same weekend as the Western Canadian Swimming Championships that are taking place in Calgary, AB.

The competition will be hosted at the Windsor International Aquatic & Training Centre, March 16-19th. This long course competition serves as an excellent racing and development opportunity for Youth and Junior competitors. Youth age groups are 13-15 for female and 14-16 for male; Senior age groups are 16 & older for female and 17 & older for male (individual events).

Preliminaries will begin at 9:00am local time and finals at 6:00pm local time daily.

2023 David Fry Championships Sunday Finals Meet Program

Please see the important information below in preparation:

  • Please note that due to the weather today, Friday March 3rd Dalplex will have a delayed opening.

    We will run a timed final session with warm-ups taking place 2:00-3:30pm, and the meet will now start at 3:30pm; the relays will take place at the end of the session. Please see the attached updated session report.  

    Note that this is subject to change – Dalhousie University may make another update to its delayed opening time at approximately 10:30am today, which make affect our schedule.  Another updated will be communicated if necessary.

     Revised Friday Timelines

  • All teams must enter/exit Dalplex through the main doors and check-in with facility staff. Access to the main locker rooms will be available for all swimmers; coaches may enter/exit through the back stairwell

  • All spectators must remain in the designated spectator areas – the pool deck is reserved for swimmers entered in the meet, registered coaches and volunteers/officials working the designated session.  

  • Spectators must enter/exit Dalplex through the main doors (the emergency exit at the back will NOT be available)

  • Parking passes are required to park in the Dalplex Parking lot on Friday only.  Each Club will receive 1 parking pass for their Coach on Thursday.

  • Warm-Ups: 

    • There will be no split warm-ups; however lanes 7 & 8 will be designated for Para Swimmers, Special Olympic Swimmers and 12 & Under Swimmers for the first 30 minutes of each warm-up period

    • Sprint, Pace & Backstroke start lanes will be open for the last 20 minutes of each scheduled warm-up period

  • Session Reports: Breaks have been added to finals; the pool will be open for a quick warm up/down during those times. Note that for finals, the timelines will adjust to ~30 minutes later to accommodate A Finals for each age group and 1 Multi-Age B Final (please add about 20 minutes to the finish times for finals Friday-Sunday)

  • Psych Sheets as of February 28th: All entries have been confirmed

  • Positive Check-In: Will be required for the 800/1500m Freestyle events:

    • Thursday Distance due at 3:30pm

    • Sunday Distance due on Saturday at 7:00pm

  • Distance Events: Reminder that the 400/800/1500 Free will swim fastest to slowest, alternating gender. These events are planned to swim as 1 per lane, however meet management reserves the right to swim 2 per lane in the freestyle events

  • Combined Events: Coaches will be notified if any individual or relay events will be combined

  • Medals will be presented throughout finals for 1-3rd place in each event on the diving platform following each race. Swimmers are reminded to wear a shirt for their presentation, if they can’t make it, please send another swimmer that can pick up their award on their behalf. These will be taking place during the competition.

  • Vendors: Jolyn Aquatic Apparel and Funkita Gear will be on site, they will be located on the upper level (old Dalplex reception area) as follows:

    • Jolyn: Friday PM, Saturday AM, PM

    • Funkita: Thurs PM session; Friday AM & PM; Saturday AM & PM; Sunday TBD)

The challenge has been designed to develop spirit, story, and a rallying cry to inspire and motivate the swimmers, coaches, and their clubs. The regions will work collaboratively to share and compete in this friendly rivalry.

This region includes 6 clubs of the BC Interior, including Shuswap, Kamloops, Kelowna, Penticton, Summerland, and Vernon.

Results will be published and shared monthly, starting in a couple of weeks. Results will simply be pulled from results from sanctioned competitions.

An information sheet is available that outlines the age groups and scoring.

GOLDEN FLIPPER CHALLENGE NOVEMBER RESULTS

Swim NS is excited to announce that we have accepted Swim BC’s challenge in the 200m Butterfly this season – we will be participating in the 2022-2023 Golden Flipper Challenge!!

In preparation for the Candy Cane Invitational Swim Meet this weekend, please take note of the following information:

  • Split Warm-Ups are taking place as noted in the meet package:

Friday & Saturday Finals: 3:40-4:00pm 12 & Under | 4:00-5:00pm OPEN Warm-Up Sunday Finals: 2:40-3:00pm 12 & Under | 3:00-4:00pm OPEN Warm-Up

Coaches are reminded to ensure swimmers are warming up in the correct warm-up period

FACILITY RULES:

  • Any food that is brought onto the pool deck must stay in the swimmer's designated team area. We also ask swimmers to not bring any glass containers/bottles onto the pool deck.

  • No outdoor footwear is permitted on deck. Shoes must be taken off prior to entering the locker rooms or walking onto the pool deck. It is important to everyone's health and safety to keep the pool deck as clean as possible.

  • Lastly, prior to each warm up period, swimmers must take a cleansing shower. This is to ensure that the water and air quality remain as healthy as possible.

The lifeguards will be enforcing these rules, but we would like to request assistance from officials and coaches. With your assistance we can provide a safe, clean swimming environment for the competitors, coaches, and volunteers.

2022 Scotia Sprints Regional League Meet Details

This weekend will kick off the Scotia Sprints League Meets in North, South & Central Regions! This is an exciting new initiative from Swim NS for our younger swimmers.  Most of the events are 25m races with a few races at 100m (eg the individual medley) so the meet should not take long. It is a good opportunity to gain experience and achieve your volunteer points.

Host clubs are still looking for a few more timers and senior officials – if you or anyone on your team is interested/available, please reach out to the appropriate person for each host club:

North, Pictou Fisheries Pool (PCM host)- Saturday November 26th 12:30pm for 1:00pm start (starter, stroke/turn & CT needed)

Acadia AGD Meet Details

In preparation for the upcoming Acadia hosted Age Group Development Meet this weekend, please review the following information: 

  • The first draft of the Assignment of Meet Officials (as of Nov 18) is now available; officials are still needed on Sunday. If you are available/interested in helping, please email Mhiran Thanks in advance to all who have already offered to help throughout the meet!

  • Psych Sheets are now available

  • Session Reports are now available – please note the following change in start time for session II (events being swum as 2 per lane are reflected in the meet timelines)

  • To allow enough time in between sessions on Saturday, Session II will start 30 minutes later: 3:00pm for 4:00pm start

  • Continuous Warm-Up/Down will be available in the wings (swimmers are reminded to stay off the ropes in lanes 1 & 6 during competition)

  • Split Warm-Up will be in effect as follows:

3 (or 2) x 30 minute (last 10 minutes’ sprint/pace)

Saturday AM

8:00-8:30am- 12 & Under Boys & 13 & Under Girls

8:30-9:00am- 13-14 Boys & 14 YO Girls

9:00-9:30am- 15 & Over

Saturday PM

3:00-3:30pm- 12 & Under Boys & 14 & Under Girls

New meet start: 4:00pm

Coaches are asked to ensure their swimmers warm-up in the correct warm-up time.

  • The 400m, 800m & 1500m Freestyle will all swim 2 per lane. Positive check-in for the 400’s will be due at noon on Saturday and for the 800/1500’s at 4:00pm on Saturday – check-in will be available at the recorder/scorer desk

  • The Craft Fair will be on during the weekend, so please be aware that parking may be difficult for Session II

  • Due to a mechanical malfunction, the pool deck is currently quite warm. Please plan to dress and hydrate accordingly!

  • There will be fill stations for water bottles on deck for officials and coaches

Top Nova Scotia Swimmers to Wrapped up Competition today at the Canadian Leg of FINA’s Swimming World Cup

Five of Nova Scotia’s top swimmers wrapped up competition today, Sunday during the second leg of the 2022 Fina Swimming World Cup in Toronto, ON.

Halifax’s Julie Nolan-McCarthy set a new Nova Scotia Provincial Record in the women’s 15-17 100m Breaststroke with a time of 1:10.25, with a 19th place finish. Julie also set the inaugural 15-17 and Senior Women’s 100m Individual Medley Provincial Record with a time of 1:05.75.

Canada hosted the three-day event at Toronto’s Pan Am Centre in its first FINA Swimming World Cup event in more than 20 years. Over 450 athletes from 40 countries competed for an overall series prize pool of $224,000.00USD; American Katie Ledeky set a World Record in the women’s 1500m Freestyle during the competition, which saw many world-class swimmers.

The world’s top swimmers competed in the first leg last weekend in Berlin and will compete next weekend (November 3-5) in the third and final leg in Indianapolis, USA.
